Making the Transition Easier on Your Pet After Moving

How can you help transition your pet to your new home?

Even though you may be preoccupied with all the tasks with your move, don’t forget the effects on your pet. As you transition into your new environment, so will your pet. Your pet will be like a young child and will not be able to express their feelings. However, their behavior will speak volumes. You will want to keep a watchful eye on your pet. They may go through a period of time where they have trouble settling down, finding comfort, seem aloof and may be destructive.

Keep in mind that your pet may need some extra comfort and attention during this time. You will have to give them the assurance that they seek. The most important thing to remember is that your pet will take some time to realize this is their new home. Therefore, they may try to run off and find their old home. In order to prevent this from happening, take time to familiarize them with their new neighborhood, keep them on a lead and let them run free in a fenced in area. You will want to do this until you feel comfortable that your pet has settled into their new home. Be patient because this may take some time.

If you have any questions or concerns, discuss them with your veterinarian. He or she will be able to help you find ways to mitigate moving with your pet.
